Why Viru Gate Matters
Viru Gate is less about “seeing a gate” and more about the feeling of stepping into the Old Town story. It’s the classic Tallinn “you’ve arrived” moment — and a great place to begin an Old Town wander.
What It Is
Viru Gate is part of Tallinn’s medieval fortifications, and the two towers are among the most photographed “Old Town entrance” landmarks.
If you’re trying to get oriented: this is a natural edge between modern Tallinn shopping streets and the Old Town lanes inside the walls.
Practically, it is also one of the most useful landmarks in the city for navigation. Because it marks the main eastern entrance and sits beside the modern centre, it is an easy place to find your way to and an obvious point to begin or end an Old Town loop — which is exactly why so many walking routes, including ours, start here.

What to Do Next
- Walk toward Town Hall Square.
- Take side streets instead of the main line.
- Save viewpoints on Toompea for later in the day.
The classic first-visit move is to walk through the gate, drift toward the main square, then climb to Toompea for the viewpoints before looping back down — a route covered in full in our Walking Routes in Tallinn guide. Resist the pull of the busy main street and dip into the quieter side lanes early; they are where the Old Town's real character lives.
Best Time for Photos (And Fewer People)
If you want a calmer Viru Gate moment, go early. In peak season, the area is a natural funnel into Old Town — which is great for energy, less great for photos.
A Surviving Piece of the City Wall
The two round towers you see are the remains of the medieval Viru Gate, part of the defensive wall system that once encircled Tallinn. The gate complex dates back to the 14th century, when it controlled the main eastern approach into the walled city.
Like many city gates, the larger outer structures were dismantled in the 19th century as Tallinn outgrew its medieval defences and needed room to expand. What remains are the two foregate towers — and, happily, they are enough to create one of the most photogenic and atmospheric entrances to any old town in Europe. Ivy-clad and framed by a flower market, they mark the threshold between the modern shopping streets outside and the medieval lanes within.
That role as a threshold is exactly why Viru Gate matters more than its size suggests: it is the spot where, in a single step, you cross from contemporary Tallinn into the Old Town.
What's Around Viru Gate
The gate is a natural starting point, and several things cluster right around it.
- The flower stalls. Just outside the towers, a small flower market adds colour and life to the scene — a long-standing fixture of the spot.
- Viru Street. Leading inward, this is the Old Town's busy main artery, lined with shops and cafés. Atmospheric, if touristy; the quieter magic is in the side lanes off it.
- The route to the heart of the city. From the gate it is a short, easy walk to Town Hall Square, and from there onward and upward to Toompea for the viewpoints.
- The modern edge. Step the other way and you are immediately among contemporary Tallinn — department stores and the bustle of the modern centre — which sharpens the contrast as you turn back into the walls.

FAQ
What is Viru Gate in Tallinn?
Viru Gate is the surviving pair of 14th-century towers from the medieval gate that once controlled the main eastern entrance into Tallinn's walled Old Town. The larger structures were removed in the 19th century, leaving the photogenic foregate towers that frame the entrance today.
Is Viru Gate worth seeing?
Yes — though it is more about the moment than the monument. The ivy-clad towers and the flower market beside them make one of the most atmospheric old-town entrances in Europe, and it is the perfect, free starting point for an Old Town wander toward Town Hall Square and Toompea.
How much does it cost to visit Viru Gate?
Nothing — it is free to walk through, as it is simply the entrance to the Old Town rather than a ticketed attraction. For the calmest photos, come early before the peak-season crowds funnel through.
